LANGKAWI – An election is not a contest to crown a TikTok entertainer.

Addressing voters in Langkawi, PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar said it is imperative for them to elect someone who can be their voice and not someone who is crude or “loklaq”.

While there is no direct translation for the word “loklaq”, a term originating from the Kedah dialect, it generally means someone who is uncouth.

“Elections today are very challenging, especially in the age of TikTok (social media)...it feels like we're being dragged into who can be the most crude and uncouth,” she said at a Sembang Santai Bersama Orang Muda programme, here, last night.

“Notwithstanding the importance of engaging youth on TikTok, one which I myself have to work on, we also don’t want voting to be based on TikTok alone.

“It’s equally a challenge for us to be present in channels that all our voters frequently access, so that our message as well as our worth and ability to persuade will not be lost.”

Nurul Izzah said voters should elect assemblymen who want to work, look for investments and further develop the economy.

Also present at the programme were the unity government’s candidates for the Ayer Hangat and Kuah state seats: Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Hisham Suhaily Othman and PKR’s Ahmad Fauzi Chik.

Nurul Izzah stressed that Pakatan Harapan (PH) and BN’s hard work for a win in Kedah is all for the people’s well-being.

The Kedah PKR leadership council chairman said the state should be administered by a government that is in unison with the federal government in order to ensure all planned projects can be carried out easily as some require the federal government's support.

“Vote for an assemblyman who can build and maintain ties with the federal government.

“Do not give room to individuals from parties that are not like-minded,” she said. – The Vibes, August 6, 2023
