MIRI – Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) has not officially approved the absorption of “opposition” Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) into its fold, said a component youth leader in Sarawak’s ruling coalition.
Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Youth chief Datuk Snowdan Lawan, in a statement today, said GPS as a grouping has not convened any vote at its supreme council on this matter.
“For any decision to be made as to whether to accept PSB into the coalition, the GPS supreme council is the authority. So far, there is no decision on this.
“At the moment, PSB wants to merge with PDP (the Progressive Democratic Party), which is a GPS component party. That is strictly between PSB and PDP.
“The other GPS component parties (PRS, Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu, Sarawak United Peoples Party (SUPP) have not discussed this matter,” he said.
Yesterday, PSB president and Sarawak “opposition” leader Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh had openly declared that his party will be officially absorbed into GPS via a merger with component PDP.
Wong said PSB will cease to exist once the merger is realised and all its members and leaders will become part of PDP, under the leadership of PDP president Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.
Wong is assemblyman for Bawang Assan in Sibu town.
He is still officially the state’s opposition leader as his party has three assemblyman, DAP has two, and there is one independent.
Wong said what is most important is that PSB wants to merge with PDP because it wants to support the government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and also support GPS under Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg.
PSB has three seats in the 82-seat Sarawak assembly, DAP two, an independent one in Batu Lintang, and GPS 76. – The Vibes, August 21, 2023
