MIRI – A four-wheel drive vehicle with four people plunged into a river in remote Betong district in southern Sarawak around noon today.

Two of the occupants died while the two others were rescued by members of the public.

The tragedy took place at Kg Semueh Baru, Jalan Lubuk Anti, around 11.30am, said the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) today.

“The deceased were two adult women. The survivors are a man and a small boy.

“Bomba received a 999 emergency alert from the public and rushed a team from Betong Bomba station to the site.

“Our team found a four-wheel vehicle had plunged into the river.

“Members of the public had managed to rescue the adult man and boy and rushed them to Klinik Merindun.”

The women were also pulled out of the submerged vehicle by the public.

However, medics in an ambulance at the scene confirmed the two women had died, the department said in a statement.

The rescue team did not find any personal identification documents on all the four, the department said.

The age and address of the four are still being determined and it cannot be ascertained if they are from one family.

“Police have taken over the case and the bodies of the deceased,” said the department.
