KUALA LUMPUR – More than 5,000 people carrying Malaysian and Palestinian flags joined the “Freedom for Palestine” rally at Dataran Merdeka here today.

The event was scheduled to start at 10.30am but many had already shown up much earlier in the middle of the field and along the nearby streets.

Based on reports, the gathering has been peaceful and under control despite impassioned speeches and rhetoric in support of the suffering Palestinians, with police officials keeping order and a good watch.

Many brought their families and children along. Tourists supportive of the cause also showed up to observe and participate in the event.

In addition to carrying banners, participants also wore scarves and many had the Palestinian flags painted on their cheeks.

The event was organised by NGOs Viva Palestina Malaysia and Humanitarian Care Malaysia.

Dang Wangi district police chief Noor Dellhan Yahaya said the gathering was peaceful without any untoward incident.

“We had received a notice of assembly from the organisers who complied with all the provisions of the law,” he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.

“This gathering was attended by people from various walks of life and took place without any incident.” – The Vibes, October 22, 2023
