SARAWAK DAP will continue to play its role as government backbenchers at the federal level and the opposition at the state level.

Its chairman Chong Chieng Jen said this was to respect the mandate given by the people.

At the federal level, he said they would speak up for policies beneficial to the people of Sarawak, while speaking up against those not 100% agreeable with them, reported Borneo Post.

“We were elected as the opposition in Sarawak, and we respect the voter’s mandate.

“We will continue to effectively play our role as check and balance and speak out for the minority,” he told a press conference in Miri.

He had earlier attended the Sarawak DAP convention, which was officiated by DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke.

In his speech, Chong said Sarawak DAP did not agree with the Education Ministry’s Palestine Solidarity Week programme and also the directive that all official correspondence to federal departments and agencies be in Bahasa Melayu.

However, he said Sarawak DAP will continue supporting the federal government.

According to the Borneo Post, Chong explained that the unity government is not a PH government, but one made up of PH, BN, GPS and GRS coalitions.

“In view of this, not all of PH’s agenda will be agreed to by the others,” he said.

Chong, who is also Sarawak PH chairman, said they would work on policies beneficial to Sarawakians, including those in Budget 2024.

This includes the RM44 billion under the Finance Ministry to support and transform micro, small and medium businesses in the country. – The Vibes, November 12, 2023
