Teoh Beng Hock’s family wants justice, not an apology or a bow
The initial narrative pushed by authorities—that he had committed suicide—was met with widespread disbelief. - July 18, 2025

FIFTEEN years ago, Teoh Beng Hock, a young political aide of then Opposition party DAP, was found dead after being interrogated by officers of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

The shocking incident sent waves of outrage across the nation, as it exposed the brutal and inhumane treatment of individuals under custody.

In a long-overdue admission, the MACC recently issued an apology to Beng Hock’s family. But what value does an apology hold after 15 years of denial, cover-ups, and injustice?

An apology without accountability is meaningless. The Madani government must prove its commitment to justice by thoroughly investigating and exposing the MACC officers responsible for Beng Hock’s death.

A Death That Shook the Nation

Beng Hock was only 30 years old when he was found dead on July 16, 2009, outside the MACC office in Shah Alam.

He had been taken in for questioning as a witness in a corruption investigation but ended up dead under suspicious circumstances.

The initial narrative pushed by authorities—that he had committed suicide—was met with widespread disbelief.

In 2014, the Court of Appeal overturned the coroner’s open verdict, ruling that Beng Hock’s death was caused by “one or more unknown persons, including MACC officers.”

This was a damning indictment of the agency’s conduct. Yet, despite this judicial declaration, no one has ever been held accountable.

A Belated Apology and Tokenistic Bow?

The MACC’s apology 15 years after the incident, reeks of insincerity. It comes only after relentless pressure from activists, lawyers, and Beng Hock’s family.

Worse, some political leaders, including DAP’s Secretary-General, have praised this apology and the ex-gratia payment as a sign of “sincerity of the Madani government”.

We expect AT THE VERY LEAST, justice for the tragedy that befell Beng Hock – unravel the truth behind which officers were responsible for his unfortunate death.

An apology without punishment for the perpetrators is an insult to Beng Hock’s memory. The ex-gratia payment is not justice—it is hush money.

If the Madani government is truly committed to reform, it must reopen the case, identify the officers involved, and ensure they face criminal prosecution.

The Madani Government Must Act

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s administration claims to uphold justice and human rights under the “Madani” framework. If this is true, then the government must:

Reopen the investigation – A new, independent task force should be formed to uncover the truth behind Beng Hock’s death, with full access to all MACC records and personnel involved.

Prosecute the culprits – Those responsible for his death must be charged in court. The Court of Appeal’s ruling cannot be ignored.

Reform MACC’s interrogation methods – brutal interrogation tactics must end. Custodial deaths must never happen again.

Reject political cover-ups – No party, including DAP, should whitewash this case by accepting an apology as closure.

There can be no peace without justice

Beng Hock’s family has waited 15 years for answers. They are not about to give up their quest for justice. The Malaysian public deserves to know who killed him and why no action was taken.

The MACC’s apology is a false flag and so is the spectacle of DAP leaders bowing in shame. Without accountability and justice, these are nothing more than publicity stunts.

The Madani government must prove that it stands for justice, not political convenience. Until the killers of Teoh Beng Hock are brought to justice, his death will remain a dark stain on Malaysia’s democracy.

We demand justice for Beng Hock now. No more delays. No more excuses. – July 18, 2025
