THE total amount of subsidies is expected to reach nearly RM80 billion this year, the largest amount in history, according to Finance Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz.

The government had earlier announced an agreement to implement targetted subsidies after data showed that out of every RM1 spent on subsidies, RM0.53 went to higher income groups, while only RM0.15 went to the B40.

This week, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly discuss whether it is worth spending that huge amount on subsidies, if these subsidies are being misdirected, and if subsidies are even the answer to tackling the growing poverty and cost of living issues faced by the B40 group.
