KOTA KINABALU - The state football body, Sabah Football Association (SAFA), will be restructured to further expand the football development in Sabah.

Acting SAFA president Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin said the restructuring of SAFA to ensure the sport’s body remains a respected entity and accepted by fans.

“A restructuring of SAFA is very much needed to resolve existing weaknesses in the sport’s body,” he said here yesterday.

The SAFA supreme council on Monday announced the Kinabatangan MP’s appointment as acting president, replacing the Datuk Peter Anthony who was the previous president.

Bung is also expected to be automatically named as SAFA president when SAFA holds its Annual General Meeting next year.

Bung said SAFA management needs to be strengthened via the involvement of experienced individuals who can really contribute to the development of football in Sabah.

“Football is widely accepted by all, young and old and the state team does not only have potential to win championships but could also unearth many new talents.

“We want football played at all level including in the suburban areas so more young Sabahans can be involved.

Who knows they might play professionally for the state in the future,” said Bung who once held the post of patron for the FELCRA FC football team.
