PORTUGAL edged into the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after a dramatic 2-1 win over Croatia, sealed by a stoppage-time winner that ended a fiercely contested European heavyweight clash.

The match saw Portugal national football team overcome Croatia national football team in a tactical and emotionally charged encounter shaped by moments of individual brilliance and VAR intervention.

The opening half was tightly contested, with Portugal controlling possession but struggling to penetrate Croatia’s disciplined defensive structure. Croatia, marshalled by veteran midfielder Luka Modrić, remained dangerous on the counter-attack and from set pieces, keeping the tie finely balanced at 0-0 at half-time.

The deadlock was broken after the interval when Croatia struck first through Ivan Perišić, punishing a rare lapse in the Portuguese back line to shift momentum briefly in their favour.

Portugal responded amid mounting pressure and controversy, with VAR decisions and disallowed efforts adding to the tension. Cristiano Ronaldo then restored parity from the penalty spot, bringing Portugal level in a frantic spell that also saw a shot from Mateo Kovačić strike the post.

As the match appeared destined for extra time, Portugal produced a decisive late breakthrough deep into stoppage time. A cross from Rafael Leão was met by Gonçalo Ramos, who powered a header beyond Dominik Livaković to secure qualification in dramatic fashion.

Croatia briefly thought they had salvaged extra time with a late equaliser, but VAR ruled the goal out, confirming Portugal’s progression in a contest decided by the narrowest of margins.

Portugal will now face Spain in the round of 16. - July 3, 2026
