EGYPT produced one of the greatest moments in the nation's football history by securing their first-ever place in the FIFA World Cup last 16, overcoming Australia 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out after an absorbing 1-1 draw that remained deadlocked through extra time.
Defender Hossam Abdelmaguid converted the decisive spot-kick to seal Egypt's maiden knockout victory at a World Cup, sparking emotional celebrations as captain Mohamed Salah broke down in tears after the final penalty confirmed his country's historic achievement.
Making his return after recovering from a hamstring injury, Salah said the players had embraced the occasion despite the enormous pressure surrounding the biggest match in Egypt's World Cup history.
"It is history. I told my team-mates before the match that this is the biggest stage in football. Enjoy it and do not let the pressure take control of you," he said.
Australia head coach Tony Popovic made a final tactical gamble before the shoot-out by introducing experienced goalkeeper Mathew Ryan specifically for the penalties, but the move failed to produce the desired outcome.
Defender Harry Souttar blazed Australia's opening penalty over the crossbar before Lucas Herrington struck the woodwork, handing Egypt a decisive advantage in the shoot-out.
Salah calmly converted his penalty to settle his side and later revealed he had volunteered to take responsibility at the last moment.
"If someone had to do it, let it be me. I have more experience and I wanted to give confidence to the team. I made that decision at the last moment," he said.
Egypt had taken the lead in the 13th minute when Emam Ashour headed home Karim Hafez's cross. It was Ashour's second goal of the tournament and also the 250th goal scored at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Australia equalised 10 minutes into the second half after Mohamed Hany inadvertently diverted a free-kick into his own net while attempting to clear the danger.
The Socceroos had come close to taking an early lead in the fifth minute when Cristian Volpato's effort struck the crossbar, while Egypt squandered an excellent opportunity immediately after the restart as Omar Marmoush failed to convert from close range.
Neither side could find a decisive breakthrough during the remainder of normal time or throughout extra time, forcing the match into a penalty shoot-out where Egypt held their nerve to complete a famous victory.
