Colombia secured their place in the FIFA World Cup last 16 for the third consecutive tournament appearance after defeating Ghana 1-0 in Kansas City - July 5, 2026

COLOMBIA continued their impressive record at the FIFA World Cup by reaching the last 16 for the third time in their last three appearances, overcoming Ghana 1-0 thanks to an early goal from Jhon Arias.

The South American side will now face Switzerland in Vancouver on July 7, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake. The winners of that tie will meet either Argentina or Egypt.

The contest was notable for an unprecedented start, as injuries forced both teams into early substitutions before the 15th minute. Colombia lost Jhon Cordoba, while Ghana were forced to replace Marvin Senaya, marking the first World Cup match on record in which both teams made substitutions within the opening 15 minutes.

Despite the disruption, Colombia quickly found their rhythm.

Cordoba's replacement, Luis Suarez, delivered a curling cross from the right that found the unmarked Jhon Arias, who calmly steered the ball into the net to give Colombia the lead.

The goal proved enough to separate the sides, although Colombia created several further opportunities to increase their advantage.

Luis Diaz came close before the interval after a swift counter-attack but narrowly missed the target. Suarez later headed wide, while Johan Mojica was denied by an outstanding save from Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi.

Colombia thought they had doubled their lead shortly before the hour mark when Diaz slid home a cross from Jefferson Lerma. However, the assistant referee ruled the goal out for offside.

Diaz, Davinson Sanchez and Juan Fernando Quintero all threatened again during the closing stages, but Colombia were unable to add to their tally.

Ghana, meanwhile, struggled to pose a sustained attacking threat throughout the contest, allowing Colombia to manage the closing minutes comfortably and secure their progression to the knockout stage.

Nestor Lorenzo's side will now look to continue their World Cup campaign against Switzerland as they chase a place in the quarter-finals. - July 5, 2026
