KUALA LUMPUR - Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has reaffirmed its commitment to Malaysian hockey through a RM2 million sponsorship deal with the Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) to guarantee the continuation of the 2021 Malaysia Hockey League (MHL).
TNB said in a statement today that it would continue to support the MHL despite the tough times due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced the league to be conducted in a sports bubble concept to comply with the standard operating procedure, thereby incurring higher organisational costs.
“TNB will always support efforts to develop hockey and this is the continuation of our support to create world-class hockey players,” said TNB chief corporate services officer Mohamad Ariff Zainol said after handing over the RM2 million sponsorship to MHC president Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal at a symbolic ceremony at the TNB headquarters here on April 1.
Meanwhile, Subahan expressed his gratitude to TNB for extending its sponsorship, which began in 2006, thus ensuring the national hockey league would continue to develop Malaysian hockey even during the hard times.
“We (MHC) are very fortunate. On behalf of Malaysian hockey, we are thankful because TNB has never disappointed us, what more with the many activities in the country affected by the pandemic,” he said.
The 2021 MHL campaign ended last Saturday (April 3) as Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) retained the title for the men’s league while UniKL Ladies ended their successful debut as women’s league champions.
The TNB Cup, meanwhile, was won by the Terengganu Hockey Team (THT) while PKS Uniten-KPT mounted a successful defence of the Vivian May Soars Cup. - Bernama, April 8, 2021
