AT the end of the Tokyo Olympics, USA were declared the overall winners after winning a total of 113 medals (39 gold, 41 silver and 33 bronze) with China in second place with 88 medals (38 gold, 32 silver an 18 bronze).
China, however, have refused to accept the final decision of the International Olympic Committee and have instead declared themselves the overall champions.
This is after they took into consideration the medals won by Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. Hong Kong and Macau are both sovereign territories of China due to the One Country Two Systems policy and thus not considered as part of China.
China state-run media apparently have changed the medal count to 42 gold, 37 silver, and 27 bronze for a total 106 medals. It must be noted that the top team of the Olympics is determined by the number of gold medals won and on that basis makes China the overall champions.
Taiwan has been competing under the name of ‘Chinese Taipei’ since the 1984 Olympic Games despite a long political battle for recognition with the mainland. However, China's threat to its neighbors like Taiwan and territories like Hong Kong often comes into the spotlight. - Agencies. August 16, 2021
