ZURICH - Elaine Thompson-Herah finally managed to break the women's 100m record in Switzerland when she eclipsed USA's Evelyn Ashford's mark of 10.76s set way back in 1984.
The Jamaican sprint queen clocked 10.65s on her way to winning the Diamond League meet in Zurich leaving Britain's Dina Asher-Smith trailing as she took second spot in a time of 10.87s with Switzerland's Ajla Del Ponte third on 10.93s.
"It has been a crazy season, a long one and a tiring one. I was so consistent because I was just keeping the faith in me and did not allow any negativity," said the second fastest female sprinter ever.
"This year, it was a long season with ups and downs, but next year, the world record is definitely on my mind."
It is the fourth time this season Thompson-Herah has run the 100m in under 10.70s and the five-time Olympic champion adds this title to her collection which includes gold in the 100m and 200m at the Tokyo Olympics. - Agencies, September 11, 2021
