MANCHESTER − Cristiano Ronaldo's mother could not contain her joyous tears at Old Trafford upon seeing her son score two goals against Newcastle on his second Manchester United debut on Saturday.

The four-time Ballon D'or winner, who gave United their first goal on the stroke of half time and scored his second just after the hour mark, prompted an emotional scene from mother, Dolores Aveiro.

It came as a surprise for many to see Cristiano’s mother at the game as it has been widely reported that the Portuguese football superstar had banned his mother from attending his matches owing to the fact that she gets nervous − to a point where she has fainted twice at his games.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, Cristiano explained: "She's not allowed now to watch big games, I say, 'Listen, I don't have a father any more. I don't want to lose my mum, too, so you're not going to watch the quarterfinals, semi-finals, or finals.

"She gets so nervous, I don’t understand why. She is not allowed now to watch big games. I get friends to stay with her and she goes for walks around the house. She fainted two times in the stadium."

Despite not listening to Cristiano and attending the match on Saturday, Dolores’ overriding emotion was not one of anxiety but that of joy as her son put his side in the lead, proving he is still every inch the talented footballer.

Cristiano's second goal caused Old Trafford to erupt as the football star performed his trademark "SIUUUU" celebration to the delight of the fans.

Following the game, Cristiano heaped praise on the United fans for their support.

"Unbelievable! It was an unbelievable welcome that this crowd gave me. The supporters, they sang my name all game.

"Of course, they know my celebration. They were waiting for my celebration, so I did it.

"It’s my mark, but the most important thing is the team. It was my day, I know, but it’s finished. What I want is to help the team to win trophies.

"I belong to this club, so I want to help the team to achieve good things and I’m looking forward to the next game." – Agencies, September 14, 2021
