KUALA LUMPUR – While the Covid-19 pandemic has put a halt to many races, current Asia No. 1 and World No. 2 tower runner, Soh Wai Ching, decided to take matters into his own hands and create a competition for himself.

“As a professional athlete, we all train hard, compete, and give our best effort, to perform well and win races!”

Wai Ching will be attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the Greatest Vertical Height Stair Climbing in One Hour title, which is currently held by Spanish runner David Robles Tapia. This will be done at the Four Seasons Place on November 18th, 2020. The Four Seasons Place is the fourth tallest hotel in the world and the third tallest building in Malaysia, after Petronas Twin Towers and The Exchange 106.

Wai Ching hopes that this attempt will also inspire and motivate all athletes to think outside of the box to achieve their dreams regardless of circumstances.

“Due to the pandemic, there won't be any races in the near future. We (athletes) cannot just continue training all day without any races or challenges ahead of us.”

For Wai Ching, the pandemic became another opportunity to think outside of the box to continue racing despite the pandemic, even if the race is only between him and the clock.

“I have also learned that we can't continue our traditional ways, where we train towards races that we know of. There are too many uncertainties that might change; therefore, we need to be able to react fast and make decisions quickly to survive and bring the best version of ourselves,” says Wai Ching

This challenge will also give him the opportunity to take a stab at a childhood dream of his to put his name into the Guinness World Record Book.

“Since young, I have enjoyed flipping through the Guinness World Record Book, and have always wondered if my name would ever be carved into the Book. And so, the dream of putting my name into the record book has always been there.” Wai Ching shared with The Vibes.

Wai Ching also shared his desire to uphold his responsibility as a professional athlete towards his sponsors, Tenaga Nasional Berhad, Malaysia Airlines and GreenAcre Capital. He hopes that this opportunity will not only bring more exposure for his sponsors and the sport but also make an impact on the community. – The Vibes, October 30, 2020
