LIVERPOOL – In an effort to avoid the likes of Newcastle from circling around star footballer, Mohamed Salah, Liverpool owners, Fenway Sports Group, need to ‘act fast’ to keep the Egyptian international at Anfield, says former England striker, Chris Sutton, according to a report from The Express.
Mohamed delivered yet another stunning performance on Saturday to help his side defeat Watford, having teed-up Sadio Mane for the opener, and then later − in the early stages of the second period with Liverpool ahead by 3-0 – the football star left fans open-mouthed with a seemingly-impossible endeavour.
Swarmed by three defenders after receiving the ball just inside the Watford penalty area, Mohamed somehow managed to jinx his way out of the melee before dummying to shoot from a tight angle.
As Watford defender, Craig Cathcart, came sliding in, Mohamed unleashed a spectacular finish past Ben Foster, much to the excitement of Liverpool fans in the crowd.
Seeing that the Egyptian forward will be out of contract in the summer of 2023, the Reds are desperate to sign Mohamed to a new deal.
However, Chris believes that the Liverpool star could be a target for mega-rich Newcastle, and given his predisposition for awe-inducing football, Mohamed can easily command significantly-higher wages every time he performs his magic on the pitch.
“Liverpool need to tie (Mohamed) Salah down to this new deal, as soon as possible,” Chris wrote in the Daily Mail.
“With each week that they don’t, they risk him doing something stupendous, and adding another £50,000 (RM286,345) to his wage!
“If Liverpool don’t act fast, Newcastle could swoop in (I’m joking… ish).
“But Jurgen Klopp may as well have been speaking directly to John W. Henry when he was saying (Mohamed) Salah is the best in the world. He’s right. He is.
“And Liverpool should be doing all they can to keep hold of him.”
The 29-year-old footballer, who has scored an incredible 135 goals in 213 appearances for the Reds while producing 51 assists in those games, has been a major catalyst for his side’s success in recent years, namely the Champions League trophy in 2019 and the Premier League title a year later.
“He’s always been up there, regarded as one of the world’s best,” Chris continued.
“His numbers − since signing for Liverpool − warrant nothing less than that. They can make for silly reading. But now this season, he’s showing he’s the best.
“While (Lionel) Messi and (Cristiano) Ronaldo have dipped, and their grip on the debate over who’s the world’s best has loosened, the 29-year-old is getting stronger. This is the greatest version of (Mohamed) Salah we’ve seen.” – Agencies, October 20, 2021
