KUALA LUMPUR – The nomination of former Selangor athlete Nurhayati Karim for the post of vice-president at the Malaysian Athletics Federation (MAF) election for the 2022-2025 term at the annual general meeting on June 12 has been rejected.
According to a statement from the MAF, her nomination was rejected based on Clause 8.8.1 of the MAF Constitution, which states: “At an AGM in which an election of office-bearers is held, the candidates must be the current office bearers of the Affiliate(s), except candidates for the president, which shall be opened to anyone nominated by the affiliates.
“All nomination should be properly proposed and seconded by the concerned Affiliate(s) with confirmation of acceptance thereof by the candidates concerned, and be delivered to the MAF General Manager at least two weeks before the date of the said AGM.”
As such, five candidates will now fight it out for the four vice-presidents’ posts, namely Datuk Mark William Ling, Josephine Kang, Datuk R. Annamalai, Syamsul Bani Abdullah and Sallehuddin Satar
However, Nurhayati, who represented Selangor in the 1990s, is set to vie for the top post in a three-cornered fight against incumbent Datuk SM Muthu and Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, who is also the Perlis Athletics Association president.
Meanwhile, Datuk Fadzil Abu Bakar and Datuk Seri V. Pulanthiran will be vying for the deputy president’s post. – Bernama, June 4, 2022
