KUALA LUMPUR – A total of 6,606 athletes are set to participate in the 20th edition of the Malaysia Games (Sukma), scheduled from September 16 to 24.

In a statement today, the National Sports Council’s Sukma Management Committee said the Federal Territories has the highest athlete participation of 579, followed by Sarawak with 569, and 538 from Johor.

The committee also registered 14 chef de missions, 204 contingent secretariats, and 1,811 sports officers for Sukma before the closing date for shortlisted entries on August 10.

“There will be 31 types of sports to be contested, of which a total of 426 sporting events comprising 223 men, 184 women and 19 mixed events, will be contested,” read the statement.

Sukma will take place around Kuala Lumpur and Selangor as well as two venues outside the Klang Valley – Nilai, Negri Sembilan and Langkawi, Kedah.

The statement also read that Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia will be the main location of the sports village, supported by other higher education centres like Universiti Teknologi Mara, Universiti Malaya and Universiti Tenaga Nasional.

Sukma has recently made headlines after the supreme committee decided to scrap several sporting events due to poor participation from the states, which caused a stir within the sporting fraternity.

Johor was also initially set to be the host of the Games that was cancelled in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but was subsequently given the right to host the 2024 edition. – The Vibes, August 23, 2022
