It is said that sports science plays a key role in the sports industry by providing a competitive edge that makes the difference between winning and losing.
Its influence has grown in the world of football with players appearing more athletic today than they were a couple of decades ago.
From having a physical edge to experiencing faster recovery, sports science plays a crucial role.
It's no longer a case of just lacing up and playing. No longer do you see teams doing 10-15 rounds around the pitch before training sessions as part of their warm-up session to build fitness. Science proves there are more effective methods. Plenty of work gets done off the football pitch.
In this respect, Johor Darul Ta'zim FC (JDT) have followed suit and made key investments in various areas of importance ranging from physiology, psychology, biomechanics, nutrition and more.

In December 2018, JDT announced a spending of almost RM1.4 million to upgrade their sports science department with state-of-the-art equipment to ensure their players are always at their best.
Among the equipment JDT has procured is an assortment of treadmills – including an anti-gravity machine for injured players – Vertimax machines, oxygen & hydrogen therapy airpods, infra-red saunas, massage guns, an ultrasound machine and more. JDT has even purchased saliva testing kits to help with the cause.

Players undergo routine medical tests throughout the year to ensure an accurate assessment of their physical well-being. Injuries are also prominently addressed by Barcelona-based medical specialist Dr. Juan Manuel Boffa, who incidentally consults for English club Manchester City.
In fact, dieting is taken into provision as well with individual plans afforded to players based on their respective needs. JDT – arguably the only club in Malaysia with a nutritionist – creates dietary plans based on test results that indicate what each player needs to consume.
From time to time or as and when required, JDT also employs a psychologist to ensure all angles are covered.
In addition to this, nearing completion at the JDT Training Centre is the Southern Tigers' brand-new Medical Centre.
Evidently, with top-notch facilities readily available and due consideration given to sports science, it comes as no surprise that JDT is at the forefront of the sports industry with an ever-dominant lead in the region.
