KUALA LUMPUR – They say the golden age of heavyweight boxing is long gone. But Mike Tyson’s bout with Roy Jones Jr tomorrow signals the return of the gold standard of boxing in the age of social media.
A few months ago, Tyson went viral on social media after a video of himself battering his iron fists into target pads spread across the Internet.
The video did not only display his speed, skill and power, but also a physique similar to what Tyson had in his 20s.
Tyson is currently 54-years-old, while his opponent Jones is 51-years-old. There were concerns aired that these two boxing warriors are way past their prime, and initially, rules were in place to prevent knockouts.
However, the California State Athletic Commission announced that knockouts would be allowed but not officially scored.
Nevertheless, it will still be a must-watch.
During the beginning of his boxing career, Tyson was known to slip past his opponent’s punches while closing in the distance to deliver skull-crushing blows that would knock his rivals out cold.
However, after his stint in prison, Tyson noticeably reduced slipping past his opponent’s punches, instead choosing to face them directly like one big, stationary target.
As such, it would be nice to see if Iron Mike had learnt his lesson and would return to the boxing strategies he used during his early days in the ring.
Meanwhile, Jones is not going to be a walk in the park for Tyson. The former Olympic silver medalist possesses speed, power and reflexes that could match Tyson.
