KUALA LUMPUR – Astro’s FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 viewing party, hosted at Lalaport Bukit Bintang City Centre here last night, received over 2,000 fans who saw Argentina lift the World Cup after 36 years.

The finals match was an exhilarating 90 minutes, as France came back from 2-0 down in the last 10 minutes and did so again during extra time with a late 118th minute penalty.

The match ended with a nail-biting penalty shoot-out where Argentina won 4-2.

As the official broadcaster, Astro erected multiple big screens and televisions across WoW Plaza, creating a lively and festive atmosphere as fans cheered on their favourite teams alongside fellow supporters.

Speaking to The Vibes, France fan Hazim Abdul Wahid said he and his friends were thrilled to have celebrated the sportsmanship with the rest of the crowd, despite their team’s defeat.

“I was mostly disappointed when the (France) player missed the header (during the penalty shoot-out), that was when we knew France had no hope of winning the game.

“But it is alright because this is the best viewing party we have attended. We did so many activities while waiting for the game to start, which helped build up momentum towards the kick-off,” said Hazim.

Football watch party first-timer Fakhrulrazi Mokti said that even though France did not win, he was glad to be able to celebrate the sport with other supporters.

“I have got to give it to France, they played really well throughout the game and fought their hardest till 3-3.

“Even though my favourite team did not win, the vibes of the crowd here were great. Everybody enjoyed the game and celebrated the sportsmanship, as how it should be.”

Meanwhile, Argentina supporters Isaac Lee and Leo Lee told The Vibes that being in a crowd after staying in for two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic was one of the most exciting parts of the evening.

“I have been to other football watch parties, but I would say this has been the most exciting one because I enjoyed the crowd.

“After what happened during the pandemic, I am glad we get to do this now to celebrate the sport,” said Isaac.

His friend Leo echoed his sentiment, adding that the match kept him on the edge of his seat till the very end.

“For a second there, I really thought Argentina was going to lose because after they led with two goals, they did not defend well.

“But at last, the ending was perfect. It was suspenseful when (Kylian) Mbappe scored the hattrick, but as a huge (Lionel) Messi fan, I have faith in him to perform.

“Being here is also great because I can share the joy with all the fans, and it is very ‘happening’.”
