POLICE are looking for a man to assist in an investigation following a report lodged by a female tourist that she had been recorded through a hidden camera fixed in the bathroom of the homestay unit where she had put up in Penang.

Northeast District police chief Asst Comm Razlam Ab Hamid said that based on the investigation thus far a local man is suspected of being linked to the act.

He said that so far the police have recorded the statements of four individuals, including the complainant who was vacationing in Penang and the manager of the homestay business in the Jelutong area on the island.

"Based on the investigation and evidence gathered so far, police are tracking a man who is believed to be linked to the hidden camera incident in the bathroom,” he was quoted as saying by Bernama today.

The camera was connected to the man's mobile phone, he added.

"This is why we he needs to be reached to help investigate the case," he explained.

The case is being investigated under Section 509 of the Penal Code for insulting the modesty of a person.

Yesterday, the police had confirmed receiving a report from the 24-year-old local woman claiming to have been spied on through a camera hidden in a perfume container in the bathroom of the unit while on holiday in Penang for two days.

The woman had checked in to the homestay with three of her friends on February 5.

"On February 6 at about 8 pm, the complainant claimed to have found a camera hidden in the container in the bathroom.

"The complainant then took out the camera and complained about the matter to the management of the homestay before going to the Jelutong police station to file a report," Razlam had said. – The Vibes, February 11, 2024
