BUDI95 fuel subsidy welcomed as principled reform to curb leakages and support citizens

DEPUTY Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has expressed full support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s announcement of the targeted fuel subsidy programme, BUDI MADANI RON95 (BUDI95), calling it a principled and people-focused decision.

“From my perspective as part of the national leadership, this is a principled decision rooted in genuine concern for the people’s welfare,” Zahid stated in a Facebook post. “God willing, we will continue to support the Government’s efforts for a fairer, more sustainable and inclusive Malaysia.”

Under BUDI95, the retail price of RON95 petrol for Malaysians will be reduced from RM2.05 to RM1.99 per litre beginning 30 September 2025. Only Malaysian citizens will be eligible for the subsidised rate, while non-citizens and large corporations will be required to pay the unsubsidised market rate of RM2.60 per litre.

Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming also described the move as a long-overdue, far-sighted reform to prevent billions in subsidy leakages that occur each year, particularly to non-taxpaying foreign users.

“With BUDI95, government subsidies are now channelled accurately and fairly — exclusively to Malaysian citizens,” Nga said in a statement on Monday. “This is evidence of the MADANI Government’s commitment to defending the people’s interests while ensuring a more resilient and stable national budget.”

He added that the programme reflects a balanced approach by the Anwar-led administration, prioritising both social protection and fiscal discipline.

“All Malaysians with a valid MyKad and driving licence will qualify for up to 300 litres of subsidised RON95 per month, with no new registration required,” Nga noted. E-hailing drivers are exempted from this cap.

The subsidy is accessible through MyKad verification at petrol station counters, pumps or via apps such as Setel and Touch ’n Go.

“BUDI95 doesn’t just ease the cost of living — with petrol at RM1.99 per litre, one of the lowest prices globally — it also finally puts an end to subsidy leakages that have burdened the country since independence,” Nga added. “This is the essence of Malaysia MADANI — ensuring no one is left behind and every ringgit spent delivers real benefit to the people.” - September 22, 2025
