POLICE are relying on the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to help identify the individual behind alleged death threats posted on social media against a lawyer involved in a high-profile police shooting case in Melaka.

Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said investigators have already recorded statements from the complainant and several other individuals as part of the ongoing probe.

“The lawyer lodged a police report on Dec 5. The case is being investigated under Section 507 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

“We have sought MCMC's assistance to obtain details of the individual who posted the threatening comment and are awaiting their feedback,” he told reporters at the Selangor police headquarters on Monday.

Earlier, Petaling Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Shamsudin Mamat said investigations showed the lawyer had come across a comment containing death threats from an unknown individual while at his office in Petaling Jaya.

The comment was believed to be linked to a case the lawyer was handling.

The threats are connected to legal proceedings arising from the fatal shooting of three men in Melaka on Nov 24.

Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar previously said the suspects, known as the “DT Gang”, were shot dead after allegedly attacking a police corporal who attempted to stop them at about 4am.

Police investigations found that the main suspect, aged 29, had 39 previous criminal and drug-related records and was also wanted by police, while another suspect had 12 similar records.

The group was believed to have been involved in armed robbery cases across Melaka, Negeri Sembilan and Selangor, with losses estimated at RM1.35 million.

Following complaints lodged by the families of the deceased over the police action, the Criminal Investigation Department at Bukit Aman took over the investigation into the shooting on Dec 3.

Dzulkhairi had earlier said the men were suspected members of “Geng Durian Tunggal” and had ambushed police during Op Casa Melaka, slashing a police corporal on the arm.

On Wednesday, the families of the three men, identified as M. Puvaneswaran, 24, M. Pushpanathan, 21, and G. Logeswaran, 29, appealed to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to intervene and to convene an urgent meeting with the Home Ministry, arguing that the incident warranted the establishment of a Royal Commission of Inquiry. - December 15, 2025
