MALAYSIA’S new Minister of Economy Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, and Deputy Minister Dato’ Indera Mohd Shahar Abdullah, officially began their tenure today, starting with a briefing at the Ministry of Economy following their oath-taking ceremony at Istana Negara.

Speaking after discussions with the Chief Secretary and Deputy Chief Secretaries, Akmal acknowledged the heavy economic challenges facing the nation.

“We are confronted with a very challenging economic environment. Global economic growth is expected to slow at least until 2027, with geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainty, and global trade volatility continuing to pose major challenges to growth,” he said.

He emphasised that responsible action is required to explore all possible options to position Malaysia’s economy favourably despite these difficulties.

“Insya Allah, these concerns will guide my focus in determining priorities,” he added.

The Ministry of Economy extended a warm welcome to the new leadership, pledging commitment to advance national economic development, ensure equitable resource distribution, and promote overall prosperity in line with the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI.

Meanwhile, Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari, the newly appointed Minister of Youth and Sports, expressed his intent to build upon the initiatives established by his predecessor, Hannah Yeoh, and her deputy, Adam Adli Abd Halim.

“Former Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh and her deputy have implemented very strong and excellent initiatives, and my deputy and I will definitely continue their good work,” he said.

Dr Taufiq highlighted the crucial support of the Ministry’s Secretary-General, Datuk Dr Nagulendran Kangayatkarasu, in developing integrated youth and sports programmes.

He emphasised collaboration across government agencies to strengthen initiatives aimed at building a sustainable Madani Malaysia.

“With the trust given by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the support of the secretary-general, I am confident we can elevate KBS to even greater heights,” he said after formally clocking in at the ministry’s headquarters.

Likewise, the Ministry of Youth and Sports expressed its appreciation to Hannah Yeoh and Adam Adli for their contributions to national youth policies, high-performance sports, and athlete welfare, affirming its commitment to continue working professionally with the new leadership to advance the national youth and sports development agenda.

In the religious affairs portfolio, Dr Zulkifli Hasan, appointed Minister in the Prime Minister's Department for Religious Affairs, and his Deputy, Marhamah Rosli, also began official duties today.

Dr Zulkifli pledged to lead the country’s Islamic affairs with an approach that is inclusive, moderate, and reflective of Malaysia’s diverse society.

“What we aim to project is an image of Islam that is compassionate, inclusive, peaceful, purpose-driven, moderate (wasatiyyah), and celebrates diversity.

At the same time, this progressive Islam should be highlighted so all can see its beauty and its ability to bring mercy to the world and the people of Malaysia,” he said.

Dr Zulkifli stressed that his priority is to build a strong, cohesive team across all 14 agencies under his portfolio.

“What is important is to foster harmony, unity, and alignment of hearts and minds among all agencies to advance the mission and direction of religion in Malaysia effectively,” he said, expressing gratitude to the Prime Minister and national leadership for entrusting him with this significant responsibility.

The start of their official duties marks the beginning of a coordinated effort across economic, youth, sports, and religious portfolios, aimed at advancing Malaysia’s development and societal well-being under the Madani government. - December 17, 2025
