NORTH Korea test-fired a tactical ballistic missile, state media reported on Tuesday, as Pyongyang continued to advance its weapons capabilities amid heightened tensions on the Korean peninsula.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said the test on Monday confirmed the successful technical upgrading of a key component of the missile, but provided no further details.

South Korea’s military said on Monday that North Korea had fired multiple ballistic missiles towards the sea off its east coast.

The latest launch marked Pyongyang’s fourth missile test in a month, following South Korea’s recent test of a hypersonic missile.

Meanwhile, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited a defence industry museum on Sunday showcasing weapons developed during his leadership.

Kim said the country’s weapons, which strengthen North Korea’s standing, “will be developed and completed in a more strenuous manner”, KCNA reported.

The missile test also comes as US President Donald Trump indicated he could meet Kim during his visit to Asia.

Asked by reporters on Monday whether he might meet the North Korean leader, Trump said: “I may, yeah. That'll be exciting, won't it? But I get along with him.” - October 13, 2026
