BANGLADESH Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and fled the country, media reports said.
Her resignation comes as thousands of protesters have taken to the streets in the capital Dhaka over the past month. Clashes between police and protesters have seen some 300 people killed.
According to a BBC report, Hasina, who has led Bangladesh since 2009, and her sister have fled to neighboring India.
At the same time, reports are also saying that demonstrators have stormed Hasina’s official residence in Dhaka.
The student protest started last month with demands to abolish quotas for civil service jobs. It then turned into an anti-government movement and nationwide unrest, with calls for Hasina’s resignation.
As a result of the ongoing protests, Bangladesh has imposed a curfew and internet clampdown.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s army chief spoke to the nation in a televised address, saying an interim government would be formed.
Waker-uz-Zaman said he was going to meet President Mohammed Shahabuddin, and was hoping that a “solution” would be found by the end of the day, reported BBC News.
The army chief said he had already spoken to the country’s opposition parties.
