A HELICOPTER carrying six people has crashed in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand while en route to Kedarnath, a major Hindu pilgrimage site in the Himalayas, Indian news agency ANI reported on Sunday.

The helicopter, which departed from Dehradun, reportedly disappeared from radar near the mountainous area of Gaurikund before authorities confirmed it had crashed.

Quoting official sources, ANI said search and rescue operations are currently being carried out by local authorities, though no information on the condition of the passengers has yet been released.

Gaurikund, located along the final stretch to the Kedarnath temple, is known for its treacherous terrain and unpredictable weather, often affecting flight safety and air navigation in the region.

India's civil aviation authorities are expected to issue an official statement in due course. - June 15, 2025
