NORTH Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the launch of long-range strategic cruise missiles on Sunday, according to state media, as Pyongyang continued a series of high-profile military and economic activities ahead of a major ruling party congress scheduled for early 2026.
The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Monday that Kim observed the missiles as they followed their planned flight path over waters west of the Korean Peninsula before striking their targets. Kim was quoted as expressing “great satisfaction” with the outcome of the launch.
Reuters cited that the missile test was the latest in a succession of public appearances by Kim, aimed at highlighting North Korea’s military capabilities and economic development as the country approaches a politically significant juncture.
Kim said that “checking the reliability and rapid response of the components of the DPRK’s nuclear deterrent on a regular basis … (is) just a responsible exercise,” citing what he described as the country’s exposure to “various security threats,” using North Korea’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
He reaffirmed that North Korea would continue to devote all its efforts to the “unlimited” development of its nuclear combat force, KCNA said.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed on Monday that its military had detected the launch of multiple cruise missiles at around 8am on Sunday, or 11pm GMT on Saturday. The missiles were launched from the Sunan area near Pyongyang, according to the South Korean military.
The launch followed a report by KCNA last week that Kim had inspected the construction of a nuclear-powered submarine alongside his daughter, widely viewed as a possible successor, and had overseen the test-firing of long-range surface-to-air missiles.
Yonhap news agency reported that North Korea could carry out additional missile tests around New Year’s Day, citing a South Korean military official.
Beyond military displays, Kim has also maintained a visible presence at economic events. KCNA said he attended the opening ceremony of a paper mill on Sunday.
Over the past month, Kim has appeared at numerous inauguration ceremonies for facilities including factories and hotels, as the country accelerates efforts to complete its current five-year development plan before convening the Ninth Congress of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea in early 2026.
Analysts say the combination of weapons tests and economic showcases reflects Pyongyang’s attempt to project strength and stability at home while signalling resolve to external audiences amid persistent security tensions on the Korean Peninsula. - December 29, 2025
