5.0-magnitude earthquake strikes Philippine archipelago; no tsunami threat to Malaysia

A MODERATE earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale struck the Philippine archipelago at 6.27am, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET Malaysia).

In a statement, MET Malaysia said the tremor was recorded at a depth of 10 kilometres, indicating a relatively shallow seismic event.

The department said the earthquake occurred at coordinates 20.4 degrees north and 120.2 degrees east, approximately 245 kilometres south of Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

Authorities confirmed that there is no tsunami threat to Malaysia following the earthquake. - February 12, 2026
