A powerful earthquake measuring magnitude 6.0 struck near the island region of Honaunau-Napoopoo on Friday evening, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The tremor was recorded approximately 12 kilometres south of Honaunau-Napoopoo on Hawaii Island, triggering shaking across nearby communities and prompting close monitoring by geological authorities.

According to preliminary data released by the US Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 22.4 kilometres beneath the surface.

The epicentre was initially located at latitude 19.34 degrees north and longitude 155.84 degrees west.

Xinhua reported on Saturday that there were no immediate reports of major casualties or widespread structural damage following the quake, although assessments were still ongoing as authorities continued evaluating the impact across affected areas.

Hawaii sits within the seismically active Pacific region and regularly experiences earthquakes linked to volcanic and tectonic activity beneath the island chain.

The latest tremor adds to growing global attention on seismic risks across the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, one of the world’s most active earthquake and volcanic zones.

Authorities have urged residents in affected areas to remain alert for possible aftershocks while emergency agencies continue monitoring developments. - May 23, 2026
