THAI police have charged an Australian man with murder after the body of a 17-year-old Thai girl was discovered stuffed inside a suitcase and abandoned near a railway line in the seaside city of Pattaya.
The suspect, identified by police as Simon Peter Carman, was arrested at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport in the early hours of Saturday as he was preparing to board a flight out of Thailand.
He has been charged with intentional murder, concealing a corpse, moving or destroying a corpse, and abducting a minor for indecent purposes.
According to Pattaya City Police superintendent Police Colonel Anek Srathongyoo, the charges carry penalties ranging from 15 to 20 years' imprisonment, life imprisonment or the death penalty if the suspect is convicted.
Police said Carman has made a partial confession. "He said he did not intend to kill her, but admitted strangling her, causing her death.
"He stated that they had an argument and, during the altercation, he strangled the woman," Anek told Reuters.
The investigation began on Friday after the victim's friend reported her missing, telling police she had last been seen walking with a foreign man before disappearing.
Investigators traced the pair's movements through closed-circuit television footage, which showed the teenager and the suspect entering a condominium together at about 3.35am on Thursday.
Police later searched the apartment, where they found the suspect's passport, although neither he nor the teenager was present.
Authorities have not explained how the suspect intended to leave Thailand without the travel document.
Further CCTV footage allegedly showed a man matching the suspect's description dragging a large black suitcase from the condominium.
The victim's body was discovered inside the suitcase in waist-high grass near a railway track, a short distance from Pattaya Beach.
Police said the teenager and the suspect met while walking along Pattaya's beachfront on Wednesday evening before deciding to continue spending time together at his condominium.

Police in the coastal city of Pattaya said they found Tunchanok Donhomla "stuffed" in the bag, which had been discarded near a railway track, in the early hours of Saturday.
"On the day of the incident, he was out walking when he met the victim. They struck up a conversation, decided to continue spending time together, and later returned to his condominium," Anek said.
He added that the victim, who was her family's only child, had arrived in Pattaya only a few days before the incident.
Investigators allege that following an argument inside the apartment, the suspect strangled the teenager before placing her body inside the suitcase and later disposing of it outside the building.
An autopsy is pending to determine the precise cause of death and gather forensic evidence.
Police said investigators are continuing to compile evidence before submitting the case to prosecutors, who will decide whether to formally indict the suspect.
Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed it is providing consular assistance to an Australian citizen detained in Thailand but declined to comment further.
Reuters said it was unable to reach Carman for comment, while Thai police stated that he has not yet appointed a lawyer.
The victim's stepmother, Oradee Bussarakum, said the family feared the worst after seeing media reports about the discovery of a suitcase.
"We were scared," she said. "We just hoped it wouldn't turn out the way we feared. Now our eyes are swollen from crying." - June 30, 2026
