A MAGNITUDE 6.2 earthquake struck Indonesia’s Halmahera region on Thursday, shaking parts of North Maluku at an intermediate depth of about 121km, according to the National Earthquake Information Centre of the United States Geological Survey.

The quake’s epicentre was initially reported as approximately 115km north of Ternate, Indonesia, while other preliminary assessments placed it around 58km west of Tobelo in North Maluku.

Seismological agencies including USGS and the German Research Centre for Geosciences recorded slight variations in magnitude, ranging from 6.0 to 6.3, and depth estimates between 109km and 127km.

Authorities and monitoring agencies indicated that the relatively deep focus of the quake reduced the likelihood of severe surface shaking, with early social media reports and preliminary assessments suggesting only moderate tremors were felt across parts of the region.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties at the time of writing. - July 3, 2026
