THE death toll from last month’s devastating flash floods and mudslides along the Nepal-China border has risen to 1,442, with Nepal reporting 1,399 deaths and China 43.
Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said 14 more bodies were recovered on Tuesday, bringing the cumulative number of bodies recovered in flood-hit areas to 1,399.
It said 5,179 people remained missing in Nepal, while 13,742 had been rescued and 21,022 security personnel deployed for search, rescue and relief operations.
Among those reported missing in Nepal were 587 foreign tourists, although authorities said the figure remained subject to verification and could include unidentified bodies and people who had already been rescued.
On the Chinese side, the death toll remained at 43, with 519 people missing, including 261 foreigners in Tibet, which Beijing officially designates as the Xizang autonomous region.
The combined number of people still missing in Nepal and China stands at 5,698.
The disaster struck on Aug 26 after a glacier on Mount Langtang Lirung in Nepal fractured at an altitude of 5,200 metres.
The fracture triggered an ice-rock avalanche that developed into a massive debris flow, sweeping through valleys along the border.
Floodwaters and mudslides devastated Nepal’s Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and Kavre districts, as well as parts of the Kathmandu Valley.
The disaster also buried the Gyirong border crossing in Xizang. - September 16, 2026
