WASHINGTON – One person was killed and another seven injured in a United States university shooting yesterday, said police, just days after another firearm incident at the same school left one dead.

A student is among those wounded in the attack about 1.30am local time at Grambling State University, said Louisiana police, with one person in critical condition in hospital.

The school tweeted that the student is being “treated for non-life-threatening injuries”, and the person killed was not enrolled in the institution.

It is the second shooting in less than a week – although the incidents are not believed to be connected – at the historically black college in the southern US state.

Homecoming activities – an annual football game accompanied by parties – have been cancelled, as are classes today and tomorrow, said the university.

There is an overnight curfew imposed until further notice, it added.

“GramFam, now is the time to be unapologetically unified as we rally to comfort one another after this morning’s incident,” the university tweeted yesterday.

A later tweet implored students to avoid spreading misinformation on the investigation.

“Louisiana police are requesting assistance in locating a suspect or suspects in this shooting,” said the force in a statement on Facebook.

“Any information, even the smallest detail, could be of value to this investigation.”

Officers also released the name and picture of a suspect in the earlier shooting on the same campus.

The incident last Wednesday left a 19-year-old dead and a 16-year-old injured, said police. – AFP, October 18, 2021
