KUALA LUMPUR – Hong Kong police have arrested a woman in China on allegations of aiding one of the offenders in the gruesome murder of socialite Abby Choi.
The suspect, who is the seventh person arrested, was handed over to Hong Kong police today, reported the South China Morning Post.
As for Choi’s remains, police are still searching for her hands and torso even after sifting through a landfill for three days.
Meanwhile, a 41-year-old yacht rental company employee who was arrested for abetment was charged yesterday. He was granted bail.
It was reported that the man named Lam purportedly took HK$100,000 (RM57,057) as a fee to help Choi’s ex-husband Alex Kwong escape on February 25.
So far, Alex is among the many arrested over their alleged involvement in Choi’s murder. They are Alex’s father Kwong Kau, 65, and 31-year-old brother Anthony Kwong Kong-kit – both were charged with Choi’s murder.
Alex’s 63-year-old mother, Jenny Li Sui-heung, meanwhile, faces a charge of perverting the course of justice for allegedly destroying evidence. They have been detained since yesterday without bail.
They are expected to be brought to court on May 8.
Police believe that Kau, who is a former police officer, is the mastermind behind the crime and that it was caused by disputes surrounding a luxury property.
Kau’s mistress has been out on bail. She reportedly rented a flat on the first floor of a three-storey village property where some of Choi’s remains were found.
While Choi’s exact time of death has yet to be determined, it is said that she was attacked in a car driven by former brother-in-law Anthony and taken to the village property to be butchered.
In February, police found partial remains in a fridge and soup pots at a seaside house.
After a later examination of materials seized at the property, police uncovered what they believe to be Choi’s skull, hair, and several ribs.
The property where police found bodily remains was equipped with an electric saw and a meat grinder that had been used to mince human flesh.
Choi, a mother of two, had divorced Alex and remarried Chris Tam, the scion of a wealthy Hong Kong family.
Choi had four children, aged between three and 10, of which the older two were with Alex. Her friends also described Choi as having a good relationship with her ex-husband and his family. – The Vibes, March 7, 2023
