TECH giant Huawei Technologies has teamed up with Sabah’s power regulator, the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS), to develop Sabah's local capacity in advanced grid-forming technology and to explore renewable energy potential in rural areas.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the two entities along the sidelines of the 42nd Conference of ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (CAFEO 42) in Kota Kinabalu.

Huawei Technologies Malaysia will provide technical training and conduct workshops, while ECoS will supply local manpower. 

Huawei will also supply, test, and help develop advanced grid-forming equipment.

The collaboration is aimed at building local expertise and providing reliable, sustainable energy to underserved rural areas in Sabah through microgrid technology, utilising solar and wind power.

ECoS CEO Datuk Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid hailed the partnership as a milestone in Sabah’s energy solutions.

“This collaboration with Huawei Malaysia marks a significant step in our journey toward sustainable and innovative energy solutions,” he said, adding that it will equip local talent with technological skills and boost community development.

Huawei Malaysia Vice President Chong Chern Peng also expressed his commitment in assisting Sabah achieve a cleaner and more resilient energy future.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by Sabah’s Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Datuk Dr. Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif, along with ECoS Commission Members Datuk Nor Asiah Mohd Yusof and Datuk Dr. Lawrence Thien Shin Hing.

The Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) is a statutory body established by the State Government of Sabah since 10th January 2023. 

It operates as the regulator for the energy sector within the Chief Minister's portfolio. The primary objectives of ECoS are to ensure secure, sustainable, affordable, and accessible energy for the State of Sabah.
