Malaysia’s producer price index for Nov falls 3%

KUALA LUMPUR – The producer price index (PPI) for local production decreased 3.0% year-on-year in November, said the Statistics Department.

In a statement today, chief statistician Datuk Seri Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the decrease in the overall index was attributed to the slump in mining (-45.8%), electricity and gas supply (-0.2%), and manufacturing (-0.1%).

In contrast, the sectors that increased during the month were agriculture, forestry & fishing (21.5%) and water supply (0.9%).

Uzir said that on a monthly basis, the PPI for local production grew 2.0% in November.

He said higher prices were reported by four sectors, comprising agriculture, forestry & fishing (11.1%), mining (4.4%), manufacturing (0.9%), and electricity and gas supply (0.7%), while the index of water supply remained unchanged.

Local production PPI for the period of January to November decreased 2.7%, equivalent to the changes for the period of January to October 2020.

Meanwhile, all stages recorded a decline for year-on-year performance of local production PPI by stage of processing.

“Raw materials for further processing fell 12.3%, followed by intermediate materials, supplies and components at 1.0% and finished goods at 0.2%,” Uzir said. – Bernama, December 30, 2020
