GEORGE TOWN – Global leader in optical solutions, Ams Osram is spreading its wings in Penang by developing a 24.28 hectare campus at Penang International Technology Park, Batu Kawan.
Construction of the campus is expected to begin in the second quarter of this year and is targeted to be completed by the end of 2023.
Ams Osrams vice president Glen Brownlie said that after 50 years of helping to lead Penang’s change in industrialization, the company needs more talent and infrastructure now to further develop the industry and the state.
“To complement and expand our operations here, we are delighted to announce our partnership with InvestPenang and the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) to develop 24.28ha of greenfield in Batu Kawan.
“Here, we will create a state-of-the-art campus, home to cutting edge manufacturing facilities as well as R&D Centre to design and develop the next generation of highly integrated optical solutions,” he told a joint press conference with InvestPenang and PDC, here today.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who attended the press conference, said that Penang is poised to grow the talent pool that specialises in light sensing technologies and concurrently deepen the state's engineering expertise in the field of emitting light.
“The significance of Penang on the global scale is well-attested, buoyed by its critical role in the electrical and electronic products (E&E) industry, in particular. Penang accounted for over 5% of the global semiconductor sales.
“Penang’s exports are dominated by E&E and semiconductor products. Penang, being one of the key backbones to the country's economy, generated RM101 billion trade surplus in 2021,” he said. – The Vibes, March 7, 2022
