KUALA LUMPUR – The value of construction work done in the first quarter (Q1) of 2022 contracted 6.1% on a year-on-year basis to RM29.5 billion, the Statistics Department said.
Chief statistician Datuk Seri Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the value of construction work done continued to improve, compared with a contraction of 12.9% in the fourth quarter of last year with RM27.6 billion in the value of work.
He said for the first quarter of 2022, the special trades activities sub-sector continued to register a double-digit growth of 24.1%, whereas the non-residential buildings sub-sector recorded an increase of 4.2% in the value of construction work done.
Meanwhile, the growth of residential buildings and civil engineering contracted 11.9% and 15.5%, respectively (Q4 2021: -18.2 and -20.3%),” he said in a statement today.
The department also reported that in Q1 2022, the civil engineering sub-sector remained dominant as the main contributor to the value of construction work done with a 35.1% share.
Besides, he said, the non-residential buildings sub-sector contributed 30.4%, while residential buildings and special trades activities contributed 24.2% and 10.2%, respectively.
The report stated that the private sector share of the total value of construction work done grew 3.2% to 60.7% (RM17.9 billion) compared to the public sector, despite improving to -17.6% (Q4 2021: -18.8%) with 39.3% share of the total value of construction work done (RM11.6 billion).
Uzir said the share of the value of construction work done was dominated by three states, namely Selangor, the Federal Territories, and Sarawak, totalling RM16 billion, or a 54.2% share.
“Selangor recorded the highest value of construction work done in the first quarter of 2022 with RM6.9 billion, followed by the Federal Territories (RM5.8 billion) and Sarawak (RM3.3 billion),” he added. – Bernama, May 11, 2022
