MALAYSIAN environmental scientist and sustainability practitioner Dr Sri Umeswaran Shekar has launched a new publication advocating a major shift from symbolic environmental awareness towards practical systemic transformation across governments, industries and communities confronting intensifying climate and sustainability pressures.
The newly released book, Beyond Loving the Environment: From Climate Science to Carbon Governance, Circular Economy and ESG Transformation, was unveiled during a launch event in Petaling Jaya attended by policymakers, academics, sustainability experts, environmental practitioners, students and civil society representatives.
The publication arrives amid growing global scrutiny of corporate environmental commitments, climate governance standards and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) accountability frameworks, with increasing pressure on institutions to adopt measurable sustainability practices rather than symbolic pledges.
Drawing from years of academic research and professional engagement in environmental management and sustainability implementation, Dr Sri said the book was designed to bridge the gap between sustainability discourse and practical execution.
“Loving the environment is important, but real transformation happens when awareness is translated into systems, policies, innovation, accountability, and everyday action.
“This book is written to bridge the gap between understanding sustainability and implementing it effectively,” he said during the launch.
The book explores a broad range of interconnected sustainability themes, including climate science, carbon governance, waste management systems, ESG integration and circular economy strategies, while emphasising the importance of embedding environmental, social, economic and governance considerations into institutional decision-making.
Organisers also hosted a panel discussion titled “Beyond Loving the Environment: From Awareness to Systemic Transformation”, which examined challenges surrounding climate action, environmental governance, cross-sector cooperation and sustainable development implementation.
The discussion featured speakers from academia, business, government and sustainability organisations, with participants stressing the increasing need for stronger interdisciplinary collaboration and environmental leadership both in Malaysia and internationally.
Attendees described the publication as a timely and practical contribution to sustainability education and environmental policy discourse, praising its ability to simplify technically complex issues while retaining scientific depth and strategic relevance.
Several sustainability practitioners and climate-focused entrepreneurs also commended the work for reconnecting environmental responsibility with actionable governance, accountability and long-term institutional reform.
The launch ceremony was officiated by Sankar Arumugam, Executive Director of Empower India and India’s civil society representative to the United Nations Economic and Social Council, alongside Raja Singham of the Brickfields Asia College Education Group.
The publication is expected to serve as a reference point for businesses, educators, government agencies, researchers and sustainability professionals seeking practical guidance on environmental governance, carbon management, ESG transformation and circular economy implementation.
Dr Sri holds a doctorate in Environmental Science Management specialising in circular economy studies, in addition to qualifications in journalism and marine ecology.
