KUALA LUMPUR – Internationally-acclaimed singer-songwriter Zee Avi is slated to kick off the Live4Malaysia concert this Merdeka day, in a virtual showcase that also features three other acts, including renowned musician Datuk Zainal Abidin.
Live4Malaysia is a four-part, virtual performance series taking place between August 31 and September 16. It includes rock musicians Muzza, as well as up-and-coming group Insomniacks who are set to share their love of music with fans all over the world.
Zee will perform tomorrow (August 31), followed by Muzza on Saturday (September 4), while Zainal will take the stage on September 11, and Insomniacks will play the closing set on September 16. All of the shows will start at 8.45pm on their respective days.
In light of the concert, The Vibes had a brief Q&A with Zee about the upcoming show.
TV: Seeing that you will be performing the opening day of the concert series on Merdeka day, what does this show mean to you, especially as someone born in East Malaysia?
ZA: I think getting to perform for a concert for such an important day as a Malaysian, is an honour. No matter which part of Malaysia you come from.
TV: Will you be showcasing anything different from previous shows?
ZA: I will be performing with my Malaysian bandmates, who have been with me for a while now. But we are adding Jon Khor on violin in the mix so we’re very excited about it!
TV: Why do you think this show is important? If there was a song of yours to describe the present situation, what would it be?
ZA: In light of the times we are in, music is an element that ties people together without all the other boundaries we are conditioned to have as a society. Music is a universal language that everyone can come together and enjoy.
A song of mine that I hope will manifest itself in words is probably ‘Arena Cahaya’ Ola Bola OST and ‘Siboh Kitak Nangis’ (Don’t You Cry) as a means of comfort to us all.
Expanding the fanbase
Meanwhile, Organisers PR Worldwide and Live Nation Malaysia said they are focused on keeping artists and fans connected through music and aligning their core business strategies for the strongest future possible.
In a joint statement, they said Live4Malaysia is an initiative that is aimed at promoting Malaysia’s local talents to a global fanbase, while a virtual platform enables a greater reach for artists to share their music with fans outside of their borders.
“The recently established partnership between PR Worldwide and Live Nation, with the setting up of Live Nation Malaysia, has allowed us to expand our fanbase and the ability to reach out to music fans across the Asia-Pacific region,” said PR Worldwide managing director Para R.
“This is a great platform for us to showcase our very own, talented artists, including budding, up-and-coming acts. We chose the Merdeka month to launch this with the spirit of uniting all fellow Malaysians while we work together to come out of these challenging times, stronger and better”.
In the spirit of ‘Merdeka’ through to Malaysia Day in September, the project also aims to assist families and individuals affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Part of the proceeds from the project will benefit The Hope Branch, an initiative to raise funds and swiftly deliver aid for those who need it the most. Proceeds from ‘Donations’ given via a donation feature of the streaming platform will also be channelled to The Hope Branch.
The Hope Branch, established by comedian Harith Iskander and wife Dr Jezzamine Lim, is aimed at raising funds for those affected by the pandemic.
The performing artists are tipped to perform 30-minute sets each, including their greatest hits, in the showcase which promises high-quality production that will give fans a live performance feel.
