KUALA LUMPUR – Local emo band Servants has recently returned with an intense single and music video titled 'Contrast'.
Capping off 2021 with a year-end release, the five-piece group dropped their latest release on December 21 while recording their debut album, which is due later this year.
The song is was made available on major streaming platforms the same day.
According to a press release, Contrast is produced by Izmal Che Ahmad – known for his work with the bands aperforatedsphere and Transitions – and mix mastered by JD Wong of Studio 21:05.
The band said its lyrics touch on issues involving relationships, but lately, their songs are more focused on self-awareness.
"Contrast talks about the inner battle of a person that struggles to be a better version of him but is still haunted by his past that keeps pulling him back to misery and to the point he almost succumbed to feeling hopeless," the band said.
"All of these are hidden behind a facade that defies his true feelings.
The band said the song is inspired by a confession by their close acquaintance, in which the person reveals that “I’m tired of feeling like s**t”, amid a personal battle.
In the music video, the band performs in a setting surrounded by red threads that are tangled in between them like spider webs. The setting is used as a metaphor for daunting memories of individuals who are intertwined with each other, hence minimising movements.
Servants said the music video is mainly shot in black and white to portray the sentiments of forgotten pasts that are reflected in the inertia of the red threads.
The band, which hails from Puchong, released a single titled Hands in Mine in early 2021, a year after their debut EP Holding On While Letting Go. – The Vibes, January 2, 2022
