GSC Cinemas announced in a statement that Disney has decided not to proceed with a theatrical release of Thor: Love and Thunder in Malaysia.

Initially set for release on July 7, the title was postponed indefinitely despite advanced ticket sales and press screenings.

Today’s announcement confirmed that Malaysian audiences will have to wait for the movie to be released on streaming platforms as it will not be screening in cinemas.

On social media, many Malaysians are reacting negatively to the news, and some are complaining that they have yet to receive their ticket refunds. GSC and TGV have promised to refund within the span of 14 working days.

The movie is officially banned from released in Kuwait and is likely to suffer the same fate in Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Al-Qabas, an Arabic Kuwait media platform published that the Kuwaiti Ministry of Information prevented screenings from taking place and upon further consideration, the decision was made to ban the film due to “scenes that contain references to homosexuality”.

The movie has also been in limbo in China.

According to Variety, the Film Censorship Board (LPF) requested cuts to be made which Disney opted not to pursue. The studio has not released a statement at the time of publishing.

Directed by Taika Waititi, 'Thor: Love and Thunder' is the fourth instalment of the franchise. The movie has grossed over US$600 million (about RM2.67 billion) worldwide.  – The Vibes, July 28, 2022
