THERE are still 461 schools in Sarawak categorised as severely dilapidated still awaiting repair or reconstruction.
Another 198 dilapidated ones have already been completely restored while 309 other schools are undergoing reparation works state-wide.
State Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Seri Roland Sagah told the state assembly today that the projects to repair schools in bad shape are being carried out by the federal and state ministries.
“The 309 undergoing repair now are in various stages of progress.
“The 461 awaiting reconstruction are in the most serious category of deterioration and plans for their repair are being drawn up.
“We (state and federal education departments) have also identified numerous schools that must be relocated.
“These schools are located in sites that are deemed dangerous as they are too near riverbanks facing serious erosion,” he said in his winding-up speech.
Sagah said at least 11 such schools on high-risk riverbanks have been identified.
They are mostly located in remote districts but there are also some near urban areas.
Among those in need of urgent relocation are SK You Segan, SK Maludam Betong and SK Kampung Penasu Daro. – The Vibes, November 27, 2023
