A TOTAL of 107 Tamil national-type primary schools (SJKT) from Selangor and the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur took part in the Safe Internet Carnival (Karnival Kempen Internet Selamat – KIS) organised by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education (KPM) and the Malaysian Tamil Headmasters Council.
Deputy Minister of Communications Teo Nie Ching, was present at the event to engage with students and visitors, underscoring the government’s commitment to promoting responsible digital use among young internet users.
MCMC said the carnival is part of its ongoing efforts to reach more schools under the KIS programme and ensure no school is left behind in the nationwide digital literacy campaign.
“The objective is to instil awareness among students on the importance of staying safe online, understanding the risks in cyberspace, and cultivating smart and responsible internet usage,” the Commission said.
The carnival featured a variety of engaging activities including a special KIS choir performance by participating students, cultural presentations in conjunction with Malaysia Day, and exhibitions by strategic partners such as the National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI), the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), and the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) Selangor. Interactive games focused on cybersecurity and digital safety were also held to enhance understanding among the students.
In a key highlight of the event, 214 students were appointed as Online Safety Captains (Kapten Keselamatan Dalam Talian – Kapten K-DAT). These digital ambassadors will carry the campaign forward in their respective schools, promoting safe online practices and peer education.
As of 1 September 2025, the KIS programme has reached 1,928 schools nationwide, including 144 in Selangor and 76 in Kuala Lumpur. Of these, 11 schools are Tamil (SJKT) and Chinese national-type (SJKC) institutions. - September 11, 2025
