UMK’s Transit Waqf project - a symbol of the university community’s spirit of unity

THE success of Universiti Malaysia Kelantan’s (UMK) Transit Waqf project is set to create a strong and meaningful impact.

UMK Vice-Chancellor, Datuk Professor Ts. Dr Arham Abdullah said the first educational waqf project was developed following strategic cooperation between UMK and the Kelantan Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIK).

According to him, the UMK Transit Waqf is also an early manifestation of the implementation of the MAIK-UMK Educational Waqf.

“UMK has been appointed as a mutawalli (trustee) to manage and develop the educational endowment in a transparent and impactful manner.

“This project is being developed as a transit facility that directly benefits the university community and those around the Bachok Campus, Kelantan,” he said.

The inauguration of the transit endowment was officiated by the Deputy President of MAIK, Datuk Mohd Anis Hussein, as a symbol of the institution’s continued support under the patronage of the Sultan of Kelantan, Sultan Muhammad V, to empower educational endowments in institutions of higher learning.

Arham drew attention to the fact that the total cost of constructing the UMK Transit Endowment was successfully realised through sincere and consistent contributions from UMK staff and students since 2022, including through voluntary monthly salary deductions and cash endowments.

“The UMK Transit Endowment is not just a physical infrastructure, but rather symbolises the spirit of togetherness of the university community in building an educational endowment legacy based on the values of ‘UMK Satu Hati, Satu Jiwa’.

“Efforts to collect waqf funds are still ongoing to realise the construction of the Transit Waqf at the Jeli Campus as a continuation of the university waqf agenda,” he said.

He said that it is UMK’s hope that the local community can ensure the sustainability of educational waqf development at all university campuses involved.

“After the inauguration, UMK also held a University Waqf Committee Meeting (JWU) at the Bachok Campus.

“This meeting is an official platform to discuss the direction, strategic planning and strengthening of university waqf governance to be in line with the MAIK’s regulations and the need for sustainability of educational waqf,” he said.

UMK, Arham explained, is committed to continuing to strengthen the university waqf ecosystem through the active involvement of campus residents and continuous collaboration with MAIK, with the aspiration of making waqf a primary instrument for educational development and the welfare of the ummah.

“UMK also welcomes the involvement and strategic collaboration from any industry, agency, corporate company and individual who is interested in jointly contributing and strengthening the university’s educational waqf agenda.

“We strongly encourage any party who wishes to collaborate, channel donations or implement impactful programs through the university waqf to contact UMK for further discussions,” he said.

Any inquiries and collaboration proposals, he said, can be submitted by contacting the UMK Waqf Secretariat via email [email protected].

“This is to ensure that the implementation of the educational waqf initiative can be continuously expanded for the benefit of campus residents and the community,” he said. – January 26, 2026
