GEORGE TOWN – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has moved up 26 spots to rank 39th in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2021 on sustainability that included more than 1,200 educational institutions from 98 countries.
USM said in a statement that last year, it placed 65th, and its latest achievement further strengthens the university’s position as one of the world’s best institutions when it comes to solving humanity’s greatest challenges.
University of Manchester in the UK takes the top spot in the rankings, followed by Australia’s University of Sydney, RMIT University and La Trobe University.
Regionally, USM trails Thailand’s Chulalongkorn University, which sits at No. 23.
USM said it ranked 9th in the world for Sustainable Development Goals 16 (SDG) under the Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions category.
As for other individual SDGs, USM placed 21st under SDG 1 (No Poverty category), 29th for SDG 2 (Zero Hunger category), 40th under SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being category), 50th under SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy category) and 58th under SDG 14 (Life Below Water category).
This is the third year USM has participated in the THE Impact Rankings. The rankings assess actions relating to sustainability undertaken by universities around the world based on the 17 United Nations SDGs. – The Vibes, April 22, 2021
