PENANG will seek clarification from the Federal Government over the ban on the use of the navigational app Waze among civil servants.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said that the federal side could offer more clarity on the issue, which has caused confusion among the app users.

He said that the move has drawn reactions from the public, with many questioning why the popular navigation application is being prohibited.

Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo told a parliament sitting that the ban is only for official use among civil servants due to concerns over national security and sovereignty, due to the widespread access that the app operator has.

Chow said Waze has become an important tool for motorists, helping them identify alternative routes, navigate traffic congestion and reach their destinations conveniently.

“The public want to know why Waze is being banned, even if it is meant for civil servants,” he said.

Chow also reopened a branch of the state museum on Macalister Road last night.

He pointed out that the reopening of the exhibition hall is not only to preserve historical heritage, but to enhance the development of visual arts and bring the state's cultural treasures closer to the public.

He said the effort reflects the state government’s commitment to preserving history and art while ensuring that Penang’s cultural heritage is passed on to the next generation. - October 23, 2026.
